Mechanism of Action
Although the exact mechanisms of the antidepressant, anxiolytic, and analgesic actions of Cymbalta in humans are unknown, these actions are believed to be related to its potentiation of serotonergic and noradrenergic activity in the central nervous system (CNS).1
Alterations in serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain are believed to be associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).2,3 In the CNS, serotonin and norepinephrine are believed to act via descending pain pathways to reduce the perception of pain by dampening pain signals ascending to the brain from the dorsal horn.4
